FOX VALLEY CHRISTIAN SCHOOL HANDBOOK 2009-10
(Subject to change without notice.)
WELCOME
Welcome to Fox Valley Christian School. Thank you for choosing Fox Valley Christian School
for your child. Fox Valley Christian School was founded in 1974 to provide Christian parents in
the church and community with an alternative to secular education. Fox Valley Christian School is
a ministry of the First Baptist Church of McHenry, Illinois. It is our mission to assist parents in the
education and life training of their children.
Our objective at Fox Valley Christian School is to educate children in a Christ-centered, loving
environment while providing quality educational curriculum saturated with the Word of God. Our
curriculum promotes individual academic performance, self-discipline, responsibility, and respect
for the student and others.
At Fox Valley Christian School, we strive for academic excellence, but more importantly, our goal
is to train and equip every child to grow spiritually and to embrace biblical wisdom. Proverbs 22:6
states, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” It
is our desire to help our students grow into mature adults with integrity and Godly character.
Enrollment at Fox Valley Christian School is a privilege, not a right. We expect all students to treat
their attendance at Fox Valley Christian School as a God-given privilege. We stand firmly on the
Word of God, and proclaim the truth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
FOX VALLEY CHRISTIAN SCHOOL
STATEMENT OF FAITH
Fox Valley Christian School is an evangelical ministry of the First Baptist Church of McHenry,
Illinois. Although, we are Baptist by conviction, we strive to adhere to the biblical fundamentals of
faith that are common to most evangelical churches.
We believe:
• There is one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three
persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
• Jesus Christ is true God and true man, conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin
Mary, lived a sinless life, and died on the cross for our sins. He was bodily resurrected and
ascended into Heaven, and He will return in power and glory.
• Salvation is by grace, not works, through faith in Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Savior.
His sacrifice on the cross is the only provision for salvation.
• Upon salvation, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit through which the Christian is eternally
sealed.
• The Scriptures, Old Testament and New Testament, are the inspired, infallible, inerrant
Word of God and the final authority for Christian faith and life.
• Literal Heaven and Hell, and the resurrection and final judgment of men by God, to face
their eternal destination based on their response to Jesus Christ while living in this world.
STANDARDS OF CONDUCT
Students of Fox Valley Christian School are to be a reflection of the School and of God.
Therefore, all students are to conduct themselves in a Godly manner in and out of the Learning
Center.
Students of Fox Valley Christian School are to maintain the highest Christian standards of social
courtesy, moral behavior, acceptable language, honesty and respect towards other students, staff,
and visitors. A “Hands Off” policy is to be maintained in regards to others. Students are to be
respectful and obedient to those in authority. Learning Center rules are to be followed as
instructed by the Supervisor without complaining, talking back, or being sarcastic.
Fox Valley Christian School students are expected to refrain from engaging in lying, cheating,
stealing, vandalism, gambling, smoking, drinking alcoholic beverages, swearing, abusing drugs of
any kind, using racial or cultural slurs, using any slang or language considered offensive to others.
Participating in any morally degrading activities, gossiping, or any activities considered worldly is
not acceptable behavior. Such behavior will not be tolerated at Fox Valley Christian School.
Conduct and behavior not acceptable at school is also prohibited away from school. Our
Christian walk is not a game that is played only at church and school. As Christians, our walk
should be consistent, so others can see God in our lives. Students will be held accountable for
their actions and behavior at or away from school, and are subject to disciplinary actions as
outlined in the Disciplinary Policies and Procedures Section of this Handbook.
All students and families are expected to attend church regularly. Fox Valley Christian School
reserves the right to contact a family’s pastor to verify attendance throughout the year.

CURRICULUM
Fox Valley Christian School uses the accelerated Christian Education Curriculum (A.C.E.)
published by The School of Tomorrow. Each subject in the A.C.E. Curriculum is broken down
into twelve (12) PACES. After a student has been diagnosed to determine his/her level of
performance, he/she is given PACES starting at their diagnosed level of academic performance. If
a student, after being diagnosed, is found to have learning gaps, PACES containing the material
the student needs are issued.
After the PACES have been completed, the student will be put in PACES equivalent with his/her
level of performance. Each student’s PACE curriculum is chosen to meet his/her individual
academic needs. The A.C.E. Curriculum is self-instructional, training children in independent
thinking, and allows them to progress according to their specific learning abilities. Slower children
are not left behind, and brighter children are not slowed down. Because of the self-instructional
nature of the A.C.E. Curriculum, Supervisors are free to give one-on-one attention and assistance
when needed.
FOX VALLEY CHRISTIAN SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Pre-School:
“Pre-School with Ace and Christi” is a phonics-based introduction to reading program that is
introduced in pre-school. Students must be four (4) years of age by September 1st.

completing this program, each child will start Science, Social Studies, and English PACES,
working at their own performance level. Students must be five (5) years of age by September 1st.
Students must pass an entrance exam before placement into the program.
First (1st) Grade:
All students are tested for placement. If a child does not pass the placement test, he/she will be
placed in Kindergarten for review, and then back to First (1st) Grade after completing the phonics
program.
Second (2nd) Grade:
All new students are tested for academic level. All students are challenged to complete a minimum
of twelve (12) PACES per subject per year. Most students will exceed twelve (12) PACES

at the School Office.
Yearly Standardized Testing:
Fox Valley Christian School tests all grades yearly utilizing the Stanford Achievement Test.
Parents are notified before testing.
GRADING POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
Fox Valley Christian School believes that testing is a tool to measure learning. In grades K-3,
students must score 85% or higher on a PACE test before advancing to the next PACE. An 80%
or higher must be scored on a test for students above Grade Four (4). A child may retake a test
or, if needed, repeat a complete PACE to insure that the material has been learned. This is not
failure, but insurance that that the student has mastered the information contained in the PACE. If
it is necessary for a child to repeat a PACE, there will be an additional charge for the repeated
PACE. PACE will be reissued upon receipt of payment.
Grading Scale:
Report cards are issued quarterly. Academic grades are based solely on the student’s test scores.
They are not graded on a curve, comparison with other students, or any other subjective system.
The following scale computes all grades:

*Specific requirements must be met for High Honors.

starting High School will be advised as to which diploma program will best suit their needs,
interests, and academic abilities. Students are advised to check with any college(s) they may apply
to for the required courses needed for enrollment.
Fox Valley Christian School discourages early graduation, even if the course requirements have
been met. Students must be seventeen (17) years of age to graduate. If a student has met
graduation requirements early, they will be encouraged to expand their education by taking
electives or college courses.
Homework:
Homework is issued if a student has not completed that day’s work. Fox Valley Christian School
encourages students to complete all work during school hours, so that homework does not
interfere with family time. There will be, on occasion, projects or reading material that may need to
be worked on at home.
Academic Probation:
If a student falls behind in his/her school work, shows an apparent lack of motivation, or poor
attitude towards schoolwork, the Supervisor may place him/her on academic probation.
If a student is on academic probation, he/she cannot participate in any extra-curricular activities
such as athletic events and field trips. Guidelines to get off probation will be set on a case-by-case
basis. Probation is a means used to correct behavior. If probation is not successful, the School
may recommend dismissal.
DISCIPLINE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
The purpose of Biblical Instruction is to lead the student in a godly and disciplined lifestyle.
Although, man-made regulations cannot improve upon our standing in Christ, they can strengthen
the life and testimony of the individual and the school.
Biblically, a child’s discipline is the responsibility of the parents. The school and parents must
work together in the training and discipline of each child. Cooperation between parents and staff
is the most crucial component of effective discipline.
Not all offenses warrant the same discipline. Each offense will be examined on a case-by-case
basis, and the appropriate action will be taken.
Minor Offenses:
Most rule infractions usually have to do with Learning Center behavior. If a child misbehaves in
the Learning Center, Lunchroom, Library, or on the Playground, or in other classes such as P.E.
or Music, they will be disciplined in a progressive manner.
Students needing discipline may be assigned sentences, lose a privilege or break, or need a
conference with the Supervisor or Principal.
Detentions:
If the behavior or offense continues, a detention will be assigned, and parents will be notified.
Detentions are scheduled before or after school. For some offenses, a Saturday detention may be
given. Detentions for a minor offense are fifteen (15) minutes long, but may be increased with
repeat offenses.
Conferences:
If the Supervisor feels a parent conference is necessary to address any problems with a student, a
letter will be sent to the parents requesting a conference.
Behavioral Probation:
If a student does not respond positively to the above discipline, he/she may be placed on
behavioral probation. Behavioral probation may be recommended for a rebellious spirit, continued
negative attitude, deliberate and continuous disobedience, or any behavior that has not improved
by other methods of discipline.
The Supervisor and Principal will determine, on a case-by-case basis, the appropriate steps to be
taken. The parents will be notified of their child’s probation status, and the requirements the
student must meet to end the probation. Behavioral probation is not ongoing or meant to be
repeated. It is implemented to bring about a positive change. If probation is not successful,
suspension or expulsion may be recommended.
Suspension and Expulsions:
The suspension or expulsions of a student are the final disciplinary actions taken when all other
attempts at correcting a problem have not been successful. Fox Valley Christian School reserves
the right to suspend or expel a student who, in its judgment, does not conform to the rules,
expressed principles, policies, and programs set forth in this handbook. Suspension or expulsion
may be immediate, depending on the violation, or may be the final step of the disciplinary
procedures set forth in the handbook.
The following shall constitute cause for suspension or expulsion:
• Academic or behavioral probation is unsuccessful.
• Continued willful disobedience, habitual profanity or offensive language.
• Open, persistent defiance of the authority of the school staff.
• Possession, use, or sale of drugs, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, lighters, matches,
fireworks, pornography, knives, or weapons of any kind.
• Fighting, cheating, stealing, gambling, vandalism of school or another student’s property in
any way.
• Continual display of a worldly, rebellious attitude.
• Continual poor performance. Excessive absences or tardiness.
• Not attending church regularly.
• Behavior in or outside the school that damages the School’s testimony.
Expulsion will be recommended if the School feels it will not be able to meet the needs of a
student or if the student’s behavior is detrimental to the other students. Expulsion may also be
recommended if academic or disciplinary problems cannot be resolved. When expulsion is
recommended, a withdrawal date will be set and enforced by the School Committee.
PARENT/TEACHER FELLOWSHIP
When a student is enrolled at Fox Valley Christian School, the whole family is enrolled. Parental
involvement is vital to the success of each school year. We encourage parents to share special
gifts and talents with the students. Children love having their parents volunteer in their Learning
Centers, as do the Supervisors.
Volunteering:
Fox Valley Christian School depends upon parent volunteers to make the school year successful.
Volunteer sheets will be handed out at Parent Orientation. Please share your time with us. If you
have any suggestions for volunteer opportunities, please let us know. Volunteers are always
needed for field trips, coordinating fundraisers, driving and chaperoning athletic events, and other
activities too numerous to mention.
Fundraising:
In order to keep tuition and other costs down, the School holds various fundraisers throughout the
year. A successful fundraiser means 100% participation.
Visiting:
Parents are always welcome to visit the Learning Centers. Please remember, for the children’s
security, to sign in at the Church Office. We also encourage parents to join their children for lunch
anytime. Parents are especially invited to worship with us at weekly chapel.
Telephone Calls:
Unless it is an emergency, a message will be taken and given to your child. Phone calls are very
disruptive in the Learning Center.
Conferences:
If you desire a conference with your child’s supervisor, please make an appointment. This gives
the Supervisor the opportunity to gather information needed for the conference.
Commitment to Pray:
The Staff at Fox Valley Christian School is deeply committed to each child enrolled. Please
commit to pray for these individuals in this ministry.
